1988 Retrospective - Week Seven

In Week Seven of the 1988 season the Trojans made the road trip to Russ Grimm's alma mater, Southmoreland. This was a close game and two Trojan two-point conversions were the difference as both teams scored two touchdowns.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Scotties got on the board with a 16-yard touchdown pass. Their kicker converted the PAT and JHS trailed 7-0.

It didn't take long for the Trojans to answer the score as B.J. Gibson scored his first touchdown of the season from 14 yards out. The Trojans went for two (or possibly a fake kick) as Chuck Wyatt caught the pass from Doug Goff so it was either a trick play from an offensive set or a fake extra point. Either way, the Men of Troy took an 8-7 lead into the half.

Both teams also traded scores in the third quarter with Johnstown striking first on a two-yard pass from Alex Roebuck to Jeff Hess. Alex then hit Mark Roebuck on the two-point conversion to make 16-7 and close out Johnstown's scoring on the evening.

The Scotties struck back with a one-yard run by Mellors but the extra point was block and the final score was cemented at 16-13. Both squads were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Coach Davitch remarked that "when we played them my first at Johnstown they beat us pretty badly." As far as the '88 meeting, he recalled Southmoreland "always being more difficult than it should have been and this one of those times. They were always overachievers at that time."

Davitch felt relieved to leave with the victory, "Every undefeated season, you can look back and see a few games you could have lost and this was one of them."
