2009 Tale of the Tape

 

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week one takes JHS on the road to take on the Forest Hills Rangers.


SCHOOL: Forest Hills is a Class AA school located in Sidman with a male enrollment of according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 300.


COACH: The Rangers are coached by Don Bailey.

LAST SEASON: FH was 10-2 last year.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: G.H. Miller Memorial Field

COLORS: Forest Green and Gold

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Forest Hills plays in Section 1 with Cambria Heights, Central Cambria, Bedford, Bishop Guilfoyle and Penn Cambria. Aside from JHS, their other non-section opponents are Somerset, Bishop Carroll, Richland and Westmont.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: The Trojans are 2-5 all time against the Rangers. FH has outscored JHS 147-85.  Forest Hills average margin of victory in their five wins in the series is 19 while JHS' average margin of victory in their wins is 16.5.  The average score in the series is 21-12.14 in favor of Forest Hills.

LAST MEETING: The Trojans lost to the Rangers 27-21 a year ago.

WEATHER FORECAST:  It will be 68 degrees and sunny at kickoff with a 0% chance of rain.  Winds will be 4 MPH from the NNW.

SCHOOL: Cambria Heights is a Class AA school located in Patton. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 188. The school’s website can be viewed at http://cambria.pa.schoolwebpages.com/education/district/district.php?sectionid=1.


COACH: The Highlanders are coached by Justin Myers.


LAST SEASON: Cambria Heights was 1-9 last year.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Patton Stadium


COLORS: Columbia Blue and Red


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Cambria Heights plays in Section 1 with Bedford, Forest Hills, Bishop Guilfoyle, Central Cambria and Penn Cambria. Their non-section games this year other than Johnstown include Somerset, Bishop Carroll, Richland and Westmont.


LAST WEEK’S RESULT:  Both teams lost their week one contests, the Trojans fell 20-8 to Forest Hills while Cambria Heights lost 53-14 to Somerset.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN:  the Trojans have yet to lose to the Highlanders since they joined the LHAC in 2001.  JHS is 6-0 over CH, outscoring them 270-109.  The average score of each contest has been 45-31.14.  The Trojans' average margin of victory in these six contests 26.83 points.


LAST MEETING: Last year, Johnstown beat Cambria Heights 49-14.


WEATHER FORECAST:  At kickoff, it should be 60 degrees and cloudy with a 20% chance of rain.  Winds will be from the north at 6 MPH.

SCHOOL: Westmont is a Class AA school located in suburban Johnstown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 246. The school district’s website can be viewed at http://www.whsd.org/.


COACH: The Hilltoppers are coached by Matt Glennon.


LAST SEASON: Westmont was 3-7 last year.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Price Field


COLORS: Scarlet and Gray


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Westmont plays in Section 2 along with Johnstown, Bishop McCort, Bishop Carroll, Somerset and Richland. Their non-section games are Cambria Heights, Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, Bedford and Forest Hills.


LAST WEEK’S RESULT:  Johnstown defeated Cambria Heights 53-0 while Westmont lost to Central Cambria 10-6. 


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN:  since the Trojans joined the LHAC in 2001, they are 3-5 against the Hilltoppers having been outscored 134-121.  The average score of these contest has been 16.75-15.125.  The Trojans' average margin of victory in their three wins against Westmont is 12.6 while the average margin of defeat in the five losses has been 10.2. 


LAST MEETING: on a rain soaked Friday night at Trojan Stadium, the Hilltoppers defeated the Trojans 6-0 last year.


WEATHER FORECAST:  it should be much nicer this year!  The forecast for kickoff Saturday is 66 degrees and sunny with no chance of rain.

SCHOOL: Richland is a Class AA school located in suburban Johnstown. Their home field is very close to the UPJ campus, making it an easy 10-minute drive from the city. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 238. The school’s website is http://www.richlandsd.com/.

COACH: The Rams are coached by Brandon Bailey

LAST SEASON: The Rams were 5-6 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: F. W. Herlinger Field

COLORS: Royal Blue and Red

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Richland plays in Section 2 with Johnstown, Bishop Carroll, Bishop McCort, Somerset and Westmont. Their non-section games are against Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, Bedford, Forest Hills and Cambria Heights.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Last week, Richland defeated Bishop Carroll 29-10 while Johnstown beat Westmont 33-16.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS has joined the LHAC in 2001, the Rams have yet to beat the Trojans.  The streak includes three shutouts in a row from 2002-2004.  The Trojans have outscored the Rams 249-73.  The average score in the eight contests is 31.125 to 9.125 with an average margin of victory 22 points. 

LAST MEETING: Last year, the Trojans defeated the Rams 17-6.

WEATHER FORECAST:  it should be 66 degrees and sunny at the time of kickoff with no chance of rain.  Winds could be 6-10 MPH from the ENE. 
 
 

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week five keeps JHS home to take on the Somerset Golden Eagles.


SCHOOL: Somerset is a Class AA school located about a half hour away from Johnstown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 308.


COACH: The Golden Eagles are coached by Steve Costea.


LAST SEASON: Somerset was 1-9 last year.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Somerset High School Stadium


COLORS: Orange and Black


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Somerset plays in Section 2 with Johnstown, Bishop McCort, Bishop Carroll, Westmont and Richland. Their non-section opponents this year are Forest Hills, Bishop Guilfoyle, Penn Cambria, Cambria Heights and Central Cambria.


LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Somerset beat Westmont 35-27 while Richland beat Johnstown 21-20 in overtime.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Johnstown has once lost to Somerset one time in eight previous meetings since the Trojans joined the LHAC in 2001 (2007).  JHS has outscored the Golden Eagles 310-114 with an average margin of victory in their seven wins in the series of 27 points.  The average score of each contest with Somerset has been 38.75-14.25. 


LAST MEETING: Johnstown defeated Somerset 43-12 a year ago.


WEATHER FORECAST:  It will be 58 degrees with a 70% chance of rain at kickoff.  Winds will be from the south at 11 miles an hour.

SCHOOL: Bishop Carroll is a Class A Catholic School located in Ebensburg which is about a half hour from Johnstown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 91. The school’s website can be viewed at www.bishopcarroll.com.


COACH: The Huskies are coached by Craig Sponsky.


LAST SEASON: Bishop Carroll was 5-5 last season.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: DeGol Stadium, St. Francis University


COLORS: Navy Blue and White


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Bishop Carroll is in Section II with Johnstown, Westmont, Bishop McCort, Richland and Somerset. Their non-section games this year are with Bedford, Forest Hills, Cambria Heights and Bishop Guilfoyle.


LAST WEEK’S RESULT:  Johnstown defeated Somerset 33-6 while Bishop Carroll lost to Westmont 21-16. 


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN:  The series is tied 4-4 since the Trojans joined the LHAC in 2001.  The Trojans have outscored the Huskies 147-119 and have won the previous three contests.  JHS has shut BC out twice while BC has returned that favor once.  The average score of each contest is 18.375-14.875 in favor of Johnstown.  The Trojans' average margin of victory in their four wins is 26.25 while BC's is 19.25.


LAST MEETING:  The Trojans defeated BC 16-0 last year at Trojan Stadium.


WEATHER:  Bring the rain gear, it will be 63 degrees with a 60% chance of rain and winds from the southwest at 13 MPH


 
 

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week seven is against city rival Bishop McCort.


SCHOOL: Bishop McCort is a Class A Catholic school located in Johnstown on Osborne Street. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 160. The school’s website can be viewed at http://mccort.daj.k12.pa.us/. Also, their athletics website (http://mccort.daj.k12.pa.us/athletics/) is a very nice looking site.


COACH: The Crushers are coached by Ken Salem.


LAST SEASON: Bishop McCort was 12-1 last year.  They are the defending LHAC and District 6-A champions.  They are gunning for their fourth LHAC title in a row and their third district title in a row.  Prior to last season, the Crushers won the previous two District 5/6-AA titles.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Point Stadium


COLORS: Crimson and Gold


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: BM plays in Section II with Johnstown, Bishop Carroll, Westmont, Richland and Somerset. Their non-section opponents this year are Bishop Guilfoyle, Penn Cambria, Central Cambria and Bedford.


LAST WEEK’S RESULT: McCort beat Westmont 41-14 while the Trojans defeated Bishop Carroll 35-0.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: This series is really a tale of two series:  before and after JHS joined the LHAC.  All-time, Johnstown maintains a 15-9-1 advantage over Bishop McCort (nee Johnstown Catholic).  However, since the 2001 season, the Trojans have only defeated the Crushers once (2003).  All-time the Trojans have outscored the Crushers 572-313 while the Crushers hold the advantage since 2001 206-89.    


LAST MEETING: Last year, Bishop McCort beat the Trojans at 38-7 at Point Stadium.


WEATHER FORECAST:  36 degrees and a mixture of rain and snow showers in the forecast.  60% chance of rain, winds from the NE at 6 mph.

SCHOOL: Cambria Heights is a Class A Catholic school located in Altoona. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 129. COACH: The Marauders are coached by Marty Georgiana.


LAST SEASON: Bishop Guilfoyle was 5-5 last year.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Mansion Park


COLORS: Purple and Gold


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Bishop Guilfoyle plays in Section 1 with Bedford, Forest Hills, Cambria Heights, Central Cambria and Penn Cambria. Their non-section games this year other than Johnstown include Bishop Carroll, Bishop McCort and Somerset.


LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Johnstown lost 40-21 to Bishop McCort while Bishop Guilfoyle lost 13-7 to Central Cambria.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN:  Johnstown defeated BG 36-19 a year ago in the first meeting between the two schools.


LAST MEETING:  see above


WEATHER FORECAST: it figures our Indian Summer would end the night of the game, Altoona should have a 70% chance of rain and winds from the ESE at 14 MPH.  It should be 51 degrees at kickoff.

SCHOOL: Penn Cambria is a Class AA school located in Cresson. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 246. The school district’s website can be viewed at www.pcam.org.


COACH: The Panthers are coached by Ernie Fetzer


LAST SEASON: Penn Cambria was 5-6 last year.


HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Penn Cambria High School Stadium


COLORS: Columbia Blue and Black


LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Penn Cambria plays in Section I of the

LHAC along with Central Cambria, Bedford, Central, Cambria Heights and Forest Hills. Their non-section games this year are against Richland, Westmont, Bishop McCort, Somerset and Johnstown.


LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: The Trojans beat Bishop Guilfoyle 42-0 while Penn Cambria defeated Somerset 16-7.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN:  Since the Trojans have joined the LHAC in 2001 they are 5-1 against the Panthers, only losing in 2005.  JHS has outscored PC 132-88 with an average score of 22-14.66.  The average margin of victory for the Trojans in these contests has been 11.6 points.


LAST MEETING: The Trojans beat the Panthers 36-26 a year ago.


WEATHER FORECAST:  It should be partly cloudy and 58 degrees come kickoff.  There is just a ten percent chance of rain and winds will be from the ESE at 7 MPH.

SCHOOL: Central Cambria is a Class AA school located in Ebensburg. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 258. The school district's website can be viewed at http://www.cchs.k12.pa.us/.

COACH: The Red Devils are coached by Mike Terek. He is in his second year at the controls of the CC program.

LAST SEASON: Central Cambria was 9-4 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Central Cambria Stadium

COLORS: Red and Black

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: CC plays in Section 1 with Forest Hills, Central Cambria, Bedford, Bishop Guilfoyle and Penn Cambria. Aside from JHS, their other non-section opponents are Richland, Westmont, Bishop McCort and Somerset.

LAST WEEK'S RESULT: The Trojans beat Penn Cambria 36-8 while Central Cambria beat Somerset 17-8.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since they joined the LHAC in 2001, the Trojans are 4-1 against the Red Devils, only losing the 2001 contest.  However, the series has been close.  The Trojans have outscored CC 136-106 with an average score of 27.2-21.2.  The average margin of victory in the four JHS wins is 14.5 points.

LAST MEETING: These two teams did not play last year, their last meeting was in 2007, a 14-9 win for the Trojans.

WEATHER FORECAST:  It will be 34 degrees and clear at kickoff with no chance of rain.  Winds will be from the WSW at 4 MPH.  A little cool, but otherwise a nice night.

SCHOOL: Hollidaysburg is a Class AAA school with a male enrollment of according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 500. They are the largest AAA team in District 6.

COACH: John Barton coaches the Golden Tigers

LAST SEASON: Hollidaysburg was 10-2 a year ago. Currently, they are 4-6.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Tiger Stadium

COLORS: Navy Blue and White

LAST WEEK'S RESULT:  Both teams were off last week.  In their last contests, the Trojans defeated Central Cambria 41-3 while the Golden Tigers lost to DuBois 24-14.


HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: The Trojans are 3-3 all time against Hollidaysburg. Their last meeting was last year in the 6-AAA title game. The Tigers beat the Trojans 39-14 that game. Prior to that, Hollidaysburg beat Johnstown 13-12 in a first round playoff game in 2006 and 24-0 in the 1989 District 6-AAAA Championship Game. Johnstown won all three contests between the two teams in 1922-24. In 1922, Johnstown won 12-8, in 1923, Johnstown won 59-0 and in 1924 Johnstown won 52-0. For the series, Johnstown has outscored Hollidaysburg 149-84 winning by an average score of 24.8-14. The average margin of victory in Johnstown’s three wins is 38.33 while the average margin of defeat in the three losses is 16.6.


WEATHER FORECAST: It will be 43 degrees with a 10% chance of rain at kickoff.  Winds will be from the west at 7 MPH


 
Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week thirteen is the first week of inter-district playoffs as the Trojans take on District 4-AAA champions Selinsgrove.

SCHOOL: Selinsgrove is a Class AAA school with a male enrollment of 386 according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10). The town is 3 to 3 1/2 hours away from Johnstown near the Susquehanna River. The team’s website can be viewed at www.sealsfootball.org

COACH: The Seals are coached by Dave Hess who is in his second year at the helm. 

LAST SEASON: Selinsgrove is 12-0 this year and were 13-2 a year ago.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Harold L. Bolig Memorial Field

COLORS: Red, white and blue.

CONFERENCE: Selinsgrove plays in the Heartland Conference, Division 1. The Seals’ divisional foes are Danville, Montoursville, Shikellamy, Mifflinburg, Milton and Jersey Shore. Their non-division games were against Berwick, Shamokin, Southern Columbia and Mount Carmel.  They also beat Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech in a first round playoff game. 

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Selinsgrove beat Shikellamy for the second time this year, this time for the 4-AAA Championship, by a count of 44-7. JHS beat Hollidaysburg 21-14 for the 6-AAA title.

LAST MEETING: The Seals defeated the Trojans 20-7 back in 2004 in a first round PIAA playoff game.  This was the only meeting between the two teams. 

WEATHER FORECAST:  I don't think I've ever posted a Tale of the Tape weather forecast with snow.  Snow showers and wind is in the forecast at kickoff and it will be 21 degrees with a 50% chance of precipitation.  Winds will be 20 MPH from the WNW.  Weather may very well be a factor in this game.  Bundle up!
